doctors and students from Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar held a protest, voicing serious concerns
On December 9, doctors and students from Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar held a protest, voicing serious concerns over the significant reduction in open merit seats for NEET PG (MD/MS) admissions. They demanded the implementation of SRO 49, the revocation of Rule 17, and called for intervention from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Health Minister Sakina Itoo.
According to Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the protestors pointed out that the percentage of open merit seats had plummeted from 75% in 2019 to only 38.5% in 2024. This decline, coupled with the 50% reserved for the All-India Quota, has left very few merit-based seats available for candidates.
The protesters criticized the growing emphasis on reservation, especially in specialized fields, arguing that it hampers the production of qualified doctors and negatively impacts the healthcare system.
