The Ministry of Education will introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as part of the school curriculum for students from Class 3 onwards beginning the 2026-27 academic session, officials confirmed. A comprehensive framework for AI integration across grades is currently being developed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
“We have to act quickly so that both teachers and students are ready for this technological shift within the next two to three years. The major challenge will be to train over one crore teachers nationwide in AI education,” said School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar.
He added that a pilot project is already in progress, helping teachers use AI tools for lesson planning. “Our aim is to equip both learners and educators for the digital economy,” he noted.
Currently, over 18,000 CBSE-affiliated schools offer AI as a skill subject from Class 6 onwards through a 15-hour module, while Classes 9 to 12 can opt for it as an optional subject.
Kumar made these remarks during the release of a NITI Aayog report on AI and employment, which highlighted that while around two million traditional jobs may be displaced, eight million new roles could be created with the right ecosystem.
The report also emphasized collaboration between the proposed India AI Talent Mission and the ongoing India AI Mission, along with stronger partnerships among academia, government, and industry. Such coordination aims to establish robust compute infrastructure and data systems, turning India’s growing talent base into future innovators and researchers.
Highlighting the need for swift and unified action, the report stated that with strategic leadership, India can not only safeguard its workforce but also position itself as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence.
