Srinagar, Oct 12 (KNC):
In a major decision aimed at reforming the evaluation process, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has directed all schools to conduct Class 8th Annual Examinations in-house from the current academic session.

As per Government Order No. 629-JK(Edu) of 2025, issued on October 11, 2025, and reported by Kashmir News Corner (KNC), both government and recognized private schools will now hold Summative/Annual Exams under the supervision of Cluster or Complex Heads beginning with the 2024–25 session.

The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on competency-based and student-centric assessment. Schools will carry out continuous formative evaluations, provide remedial classes for underperforming students, and allow supplementary exams to ensure smooth promotion to Class 9.

District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) will maintain student records and coordinate with Cluster Heads to ensure proper implementation. The Secretary School Education, Ram Niwas Sharma (IAS), has also directed SCERT and DIETs to organize teacher training on framing competency-based papers and holistic evaluation methods.

Heads of schools have been instructed to prepare common question papers targeting areas highlighted as weak in the PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 findings. The Director School Education will monitor and regulate the overall examination process.

As per the notified timeline, results will be announced before March 20 in Summer Zones and before October 25 in Winter Zones, with new classes commencing on April 1 and November 1, respectively.

Furthermore, schools have been asked to enhance Parent-Teacher Meetings (PTMs) to strengthen communication and share students’ academic progress on a regular basis. (KNC)
