**Srinagar, June 12 (KNO):** The Jammu and Kashmir State Council of Educational Research and Trainings (JKSCERT) has requested input from relevant authorities in both regions to organize in-house exams for the 8th grade, starting this academic session.
The Joint Director Central at JKSCERT stated that inputs are being sought from its divisional offices for the in-house Middle Standard assessment for the 2024-25 academic year.
According to the Kashmir News Observer (KNO), JKSCERT emphasized in a communique that, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the focus of assessments in the schooling system will shift from summative assessments that test rote memorization to more regular, formative, and competency-based evaluations. These new assessments aim to promote learning and development, testing higher-order skills like analysis, critical thinking, and conceptual clarity.
Previously, JKSCERT conducted the 8th grade Summative assessment centrally according to the Student Assessment and Evaluation Scheme. However, this approach prolonged the exam period, reducing actual instructional days as per the Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009, and increasing anxiety and stress among students.
In light of this, the Council is revisiting the Student Assessment and Evaluation Scheme to prioritize in-house assessments for the 8th grade, following the pattern of CBSE schools nationwide. This change aims to reduce high stakes and stress for young learners.
JKSCERT has directed concerned parties to provide specific and candid inputs on conducting in-house or school-based 8th grade assessments for the current academic session. Inputs are to be submitted within a week for onward submission to the Administrative department.
