SC Affirms NEET UG Counselling to Proceed, Re-test for 1,563 Candidates on June 23

New Delhi, June 13: On Thursday, the Supreme Court confirmed that it will not issue any interim orders to halt the counselling process for medical program admissions following the NEET UG 2024 examination, despite allegations of a paper leak and other irregularities.

A vacation bench, led by Justice Vikram Nath, learned that the scorecards of 1,563 candidates who received compensatory marks due to time loss have been withdrawn and nullified. The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced that these candidates could retake the exam on June 23. The NTA also assured that the original counselling schedule would remain unchanged, as the re-test results are expected by June 30.

The NTA further stated that the actual marks, without normalization, would be emailed to the affected candidates. Those opting out of the re-test will have their results based on the actual marks considered final.

Given these developments, the Supreme Court decided to close the issues related to granting grace marks in the NEET UG exam. However, it issued notices to the NTA and others in response to a plea seeking the cancellation of the NEET exam held on May 5. This plea has been tagged with other pending petitions scheduled for hearing on July 8.

Several petitions have been filed requesting a thorough and swift investigation into the alleged malpractices and fraud in the NEET examination, and a stay on the result declaration until these investigations are completed. The petitioners are also demanding that the NTA recall the May 5 exam results and conduct a fresh examination with prior public notice.
