Govt Orders Magisterial Probe into Handwara Tragedy, Announces Ex-Gratia Relief
Srinagar, April 12: Following the devastating road accident in Handwara, the Jammu and Kashmir government has initiated a magisterial inquiry to investigate the incident and announced financial relief for the victims.
Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, who hails from the affected area, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a personal loss. “The healthcare system in Kupwara needs urgent attention, and we are committed to improving it so that patients no longer need to travel to Srinagar for advanced treatment,” he said during a visit to the injured at Government Medical College.
As per Wani, families of the deceased will receive an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh each, while individuals with serious injuries will be granted Rs 50,000. Those with minor injuries will receive Rs 25,000. The compensation will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
He emphasized the government’s plan to upgrade healthcare facilities in the region, ensuring adequate local medical infrastructure.
On the infrastructure front, Wani revealed that the Sopore-Kulangam road, including the Kulangam stretch, is set to be expanded into a four-lane highway to improve connectivity and safety.
He further confirmed that a magisterial inquiry has been launched to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, with initial findings to be made public soon.
The accident occurred earlier on Saturday morning at Vodhpora, Handwara, when a bus carrying college students on a picnic overturned. The mishap resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to 22 others.
