Govt Considers Revising School Timings Amid Intense Heat Wave in Kashmir

In response to the ongoing heat wave sweeping across Kashmir, the government is planning to revise school timings to safeguard students from the extreme temperatures.

Following multiple heat wave alerts from various Deputy Commissioners across the Valley, the Baramulla district administration issued an advisory urging government departments to take precautionary measures. The advisory recommended the Education Department consider rescheduling school hours and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat periods.

Additional instructions were also issued to the Municipal and Public Health Engineering (PHE) Departments to ensure adequate supply of drinking water and carry out water sprinkling in dusty areas to reduce heat and dust exposure.

Amid growing concerns from parents and educators about the health and safety of students, the School Education Department has begun exploring options. Speaking to Greater Kashmir, Shantmanu, Additional Chief Secretary (Financial Commissioner) of the School Education Department, confirmed that discussions are underway to prepone school timings.

“I have spoken to the Director of School Education Kashmir and asked him to prepare a plan for adjusting the school schedule,” Shantmanu said, adding that a final decision is expected within a day or two.

He also hinted that if the current heat wave continues, the department may consider declaring a short summer break, though no final decision has been made on that front yet.

“If the timing is adjusted, schools may also suspend morning assemblies for a few days to protect students from unnecessary heat exposure,” he added.
