Srinagar, July 12 (KNT): Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Saturday said that the Jammu and Kashmir administration decided not to extend the summer vacation, citing concerns over syllabus completion across schools in the Union Territory.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Itoo stated that instead of prolonging the holidays, the government opted to adjust school timings after receiving strong feedback from parents and students.
“If we had extended the summer vacation, syllabus completion would have suffered. We received numerous calls and messages from both children and parents, suggesting a change in school timings rather than extending holidays,” she said, stressing that public opinion was taken seriously by the department.
She further mentioned that the Education Department had issued a circular to gather feedback before making the final decision. “I had instructed officials to seek public input to understand their concerns. Based on their response, we have revised school timings accordingly,” she explained.
As per the new schedule, schools in urban areas will run from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, while those in rural areas will operate from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Highlighting the government’s focus on academic standards, Itoo said, “Our priority is to ensure our students remain competitive at the national level. This is possible only if we have adequate teaching time and complete the syllabus as planned.”
She assured that while academic priorities will be upheld, the department will continue to remain responsive to public concerns. [KNT]
