DSEJ Proposes Academic Relief for Students: Syllabus Cut or Open Choice in Exams

Srinagar, Sept 14 (JKNS): The Directorate of School Education Jammu (DSEJ) has urged the J&K Board of School Education (JKBOSE) to grant major academic concessions to students, citing continued disruptions to the academic calendar.
In an official communication to JKBOSE Secretary, the DSEJ highlighted that after extensive feedback from all Chief Education Officers of the Jammu Division (winter zone), it was unanimously agreed that the syllabus for the ongoing session should be trimmed by 15–20%.
The department further recommended that instead of removing specific topics—which could lead to disparities since different schools have covered different portions—students be offered an “open choice” in examinations to ensure fairness and uniformity.
According to the letter, this move would help reduce academic stress, support students’ mental well-being, and improve comprehension and retention of the curriculum.
The DSEJ has requested JKBOSE to consider:
- A 15–20% reduction in syllabus,
- Introducing open choice in exams, or
- Any other academic concession that would benefit students.
The proposal follows Education Minister Sakina Itoo’s statement earlier in the day that the government is actively exploring measures to compensate for learning losses caused by school closures, with inputs taken from students, parents, and the public. (JKNS)
