Srinagar, Jan 10:
Growing concern has emerged among parents, teachers, and other stakeholders over the Jammu and Kashmir government’s failure to appoint a permanent Chairman to the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE), a post lying vacant for more than a year.
The prolonged delay has triggered criticism, with stakeholders warning that the absence of a full-time head has created uncertainty for students, especially as examination results are awaited. Parents have questioned the government’s move to announce result timelines without ensuring proper leadership at the Board.
“It is unfortunate that result dates were announced when there is no chairman in place. Even an additional charge arrangement has not been made so far,” a group of parents said, expressing frustration over the situation.
Teachers have also voiced similar apprehensions. Provincial President of the Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Forum, Javed Ahmad Bhat, said the delay has negatively impacted the education system.
“For almost a year, the Board was functioning under an interim arrangement, but for the last 10 days, JKBOSE has been completely headless,” Bhat told Greater Kashmir. He added that students were expecting their results in the first week of January, which has now been delayed.
Bhat stressed the urgent need for assigning an interim head until a regular chairman is appointed to ensure smooth functioning of the Board.
Earlier reports by Greater Kashmir highlighted that the delay in appointing a chairman has stalled the declaration of Class 10 results despite official announcements. As per procedure, results of Classes 10, 11, and 12 can only be declared after approval by the Result Declaration Committee, headed by the JKBOSE Chairman.
In the absence of a chairman, the Class 10 results remain pending. Meanwhile, a JKBOSE official said that the evaluation process for Class 12 examinations is nearing completion. “It will take only a few more days to complete the process,” an official from the secrecy department said.
A senior official from the School Education Department stated that steps have been initiated to assign additional charge of the Chairman’s post to a senior officer. “The order is likely to be issued next week,” the official said.
Official data shows that 94,783 students registered for the Class 10 examinations this year, including 68,804 from Kashmir, 25,224 from winter zones of Jammu division, 660 from Kargil, and 95 from Leh.
The Class 11 and Class 12 examinations began on November 19 and November 8, 2025, respectively. A total of 81,622 students appeared for Class 11 exams, while 70,117 students registered for Class 12 across different regions.
