Stakeholder Feedback Requested After Concerns Raised Over Teaching Standards

Srinagar, May 2
The School Education Department (SED) of Jammu and Kashmir is currently reviewing a proposal that would require all government employees to enroll their children in government-run schools. The initiative aims to boost enrollment and improve confidence in public education.
According to official documents accessed by the JKNS news agency, the proposal is under serious consideration. The department has requested feedback from key stakeholders, including the Director of SCERT, Secretary of JKBOSE, Directors of School Education for Jammu and Kashmir divisions, and the Project Director of Samagra Shiksha.
The move was triggered by a detailed letter from a citizen of Doda district, who raised several concerns regarding the quality of education in government schools. The letter, which includes recommendations and criticisms, has been circulated among top education officials and Chief Education Officers (CEOs) across the Jammu division for comments.
A formal communication from the department’s Under Secretary has directed education officials to respond swiftly. In Udhampur, the local CEO has already distributed the letter to zonal education officers and school heads, urging them to share their views within three days.
Sources within the department say the purpose of the proposal is to rebuild public trust in government schools by encouraging government employees to invest in the system themselves.
The citizen’s letter calls for several reforms, including competency assessments for Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers, better monitoring of school operations, and improvements in enrollment and infrastructure. It also questions the recruitment and qualifications of some teachers, advocating for stricter hiring standards to ensure only capable educators remain in service.
