PSAJK Suggests Morning Classes to Beat Heatwave:"Conduct school from 6 AM to 11 AM rather than extending holidays."

PSAJK Proposes Early Morning Classes to Tackle Heatwave, Opposes Summer Vacation Extension

Srinagar, 05 July 2025: Amid the scorching heatwave sweeping across Jammu and Kashmir, the Private Schools’ Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) has urged the government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Education Minister Mrs. Sakeena Itoo not to extend the summer vacation further. Instead, the association has suggested that schools operate from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM to ensure students’ education remains uninterrupted.

In a statement issued on Saturday, PSAJK President G.N. Var said, “Our students have already missed almost three months of classes due to the prolonged winter break. Extending the summer vacation now will leave no room to complete the syllabus before October exams.”

He underlined that this academic session is already burdened and any additional loss of teaching days would severely impact syllabus completion, exam preparation, and overall academic progress.

“Many students are preparing for competitive exams as well. At this stage, every single teaching day counts. We need to act responsibly and ensure maximum learning time for our children,” Var emphasized.

Highlighting the practicality of early classes, Var said, “Starting school at 6 AM will allow children to study during the cooler part of the day, thus avoiding the harsh afternoon heat. This system is already in place in many hot-weather regions of India and abroad and can be successfully adopted here as well.”

He further noted that several schools, especially in rural and urban areas, have already suffered learning loss due to extreme weather, power cuts, and infrastructure limitations.

“We simply cannot afford to lose more days. Time is limited, and students are lagging behind. We must utilise the available days effectively,” the statement read.

Var stressed that children’s education should never be treated lightly. “Education is serious business. We must protect our children’s academic future at all costs.”

PSAJK asserted that this issue is not just about the current heatwave but concerns the long-term learning and career prospects of students.

“We need to think proactively and find solutions before problems escalate,” Var said, adding, “Early action is always better than delayed decisions.”

The association assured full support to the government if early morning school timings are implemented. “All private schools stand ready to cooperate to ensure that students do not miss any further learning opportunities,” Var concluded.
